Personality:
Masaru is quiet. He is generally smiling and laid-back. He tries to find the humor in every situation and prefers to think his way out of situations, rather than constantly fighting. That doesn't mean he's unwilling to fight, simply that he sees no purpose in dying for a stupid reason. He is proud of his village and proud of his training, but he's confident and comfortable within himself, and not easily goaded into stupid displays to 'prove' himself. Masaru's anger is very slow to build. It takes a lot to get him really 'pissed', and when he's at that point, he's quick, sarcastic and dismissive. Luckily, his anger passes much faster than it rises, and he usually apologizes for anything he may have said or done when he was mad. He laughs easily and forgives quickly. He prefers to be around other people and often seeks out interactions with others. He's never the leader of any given group, but he's not shy about making his opinion known either.

History:
Masaru was born to a normal family. His father was a Jounin, his mother a civilian. He was the third child, the only boy, and his two older siblings were both enrolled in the academy. Growing up, Masaru was a happy, intelligent child with a bright smile and a way of making friends in unexpected places. He wasn't the smartest kid in class, but he wasn't the worst student either, and was usually counted on to be dependable and consistent. He graduated the academy without any trouble and was placed on a Genin team with two other boys in his class.
He and his teammates became very close very quickly, and their sensei, an ex-ANBU with a wicked sense of humor, guided them well. They did a lot of D ranked missions and then started moving on to C ranked missions, most often completing them with no problems.
His older brother, who'd just passed the Chuunin exams, was killed in action shortly after Masaru was placed on his Genin team. Masaru mourned him deeply and used his death to motivate himself to be the best shinobi he could be. He and his team completed their missions smoothly, meshing together almost seamlessly. Everything seemed to be going very well for them.
They entered the Chuunin exams with high hopes. To their relief, all three of his team mates not only made it through the tests without major injuries, they were all promoted. Returning to the village, he was greeted with the sad news that his father's body had been returned to the village. Masaru continued to train his hardest, his ready smile fading a bit from sorrow. But he couldn't stay down forever, and he knew his father was depending on him to continue the family's shinobi tradition.
His remaining brother was killed a year later, and his mother seemed to give up hope. She went to sleep after his brother's funeral and never woke. Alone now, Masaru struggled for a time with his sadness and feelings of isolation. However, his team mates and his ex-Sensei would not let him fall prey to the depression that wanted to capture him. With their help, he slowly pulled himself out of the dumps and recaptured his earlier drive and motivations. Shortly after his twentieth year, he was elevated to the rank of Jounin.
The fighting was difficult for him. He was never offered a position in ANBU; his temperament was unsuited to the work ANBU operatives were expected to do, especially in this time. But he continues to fulfill his missions and strives to be the best shinobi he can be, for his village, and in memory of his father and brothers.
